Are Manchester United Fans Ready for One More Frenkie de Jong Transfer Saga?

One name that hasn’t escaped the minds of the footballing world is Dutch international Frankie De Jong. A player who has been heavily linked to Manchester United in the past as many would recall the transfer saga during the summer of 2023. Now as we slowly head into the summer of 2024 it has been reported that Spanish giants Barcelona are once again willing to let go of De Jong for the right price. It is believed that the price tag would have to be in the region of £90m according to reports from Marca Deportivo.
It is without question that there would be a whole host of clubs fighting for the signature of the midfield maestro however United could hold the key as a move would mean the player would link up with former boss Erik Ten Hag at Old Trafford. The duo spent successful seasons together in their respective times at Ajax and this was also a period where Ten Hag was able to bring out the best in De Jong.
De Jong holds unique qualities as a midfielder, from his ability to have great ball retention to his mesmeric passing range. The 26-year-old has also expressed his versatility as he has shone playing in multiple positions varying from a defensive midfielder, central midfielder and as far back as a centre back.
Were united to sweep in and bring De Jong to the Theatre of Dreams he could become the face of a new-look midfield. With Kobbie Mainoo having established himself within the starting 11 and Bruno Fernandes the main attacking threat it could potentially be the five-time Champions League winner Casemiro who would make way to fit De Jong in. This would allow a perfect balance to take place with defensive security moulded with attacking power. The United midfield has been in dire need of players at their disposal who can control games. Far too many times they have been unable to dictate the match due to not having players who have a high level of ball retention. A signing of the calibre of De Jong would most certainly bring that!
Manchester United’s current focus is to continue progressing in the FA Cup and climb up the table in search of a top-four finish however this saga is one which will reopen come the summer transfer window.
