Manchester United have had an underwhelming season to say the least.

However, there have been glimpses of hope for next season with breakthrough players introducing themselves. One player whose future remains in the balance is Jadon Sancho. Following his fall out with United manager Erik Ten Hag both parties decided for the 24-year-old winger to return to his former club Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

Since his return to Germany, Sancho has only netted one goal in 10 matches. He has however made appearances in the Champions League knockout stages which has enabled him to play at a higher level than what was offered at United. It’s fair to say Sancho has had mixed performances since January, he has showcased his skillfulness in periods during matches however the goals haven’t quite come at a frequent rate. The standards have been set astronomically high as the English talent had previously scored 50 times and grabbed 64 assists within 137 matches during his first spell at Dortmund.

The competition at United will also need to be considered if a return is on the books. Ten Hag has favoured the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho over Sancho prior to their public fallout. Although all have been inconsistent in their performances, the chance of Ten Hag making rotations judging by the past is proving to be slim. A suggestion which has been put forward by fans is that Sancho can be deployed as a central attacking midfielder.

Were Sancho to make a return to the United squad for the next campaign he would have to make amends with Ten Hag. The door has not been shut however it will certainly take a lot for the situation to resolve itself. There have also not been any indications from Dortmund if they intend to make the deal permanent. From being tipped as a generational talent and being spoken about as the star to take over the game it would most certainly be very underwhelming if Sancho was to not fulfil his potential. The game moves fast and things may change quickly, the United fan base and Sancho himself will be hoping things change for the better. Time will reveal all the answers to the questions this dilemma poses.
