Manchester United are set to trigger the one-year extension in Edinson Cavani’s contract and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is open to keeping him beyond the end of next season.

Cavani was signed by United in the summer after his PSG contract came to an end. His deal at United saw him sign for the season with an option for the Red Devils to extend it for another season.

The signing of Cavani raised eyebrows and many saw it as a panic buy from United on deadline day.

However, the 33-year-old has defied expectations and has made a brilliant start to his United career.

The Uruguayan striker has already scored four goals despite only making three starts – equal to the goal scoring record of Martial, who has thirteen more starts than him.

United extended the contracts of Eric Bailly, Nemanja Matic and Timothy Fosu-Mensah last January.

“At the moment, it looks like he has a few years left in him,” Solskjaer said. “So I wouldn’t say anything else. He has made a great impact when he has come here. Let’s focus on improving everyone but he has a few years left in him.”

“He is definitely a starter. You don’t classify a player of that quality as anything else. We have plenty of starters, more than 11.”

Manchester United host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League tonight.
