Marcus Rashford: Is he a victim of his own success?

Marcus Rashford’s form has cast doubt over his long-term future at Manchester United

Being linked to a move away, missing out from the England squad for Euro 2024 squad and coming off the back of a poor campaign with Manchester United, it’s fair to say Marcus Rashford has had an underwhelming period.

The once wonder kid has come under huge scrutiny from a section of the United fan base as well as the media due to his performances last season. Having only scored seven times in the league whilst watching his side finish as low as 8th place it was seen as a huge drop off from the season prior as the England international netted 17 league goals and helped his team finish 3rd in the Premier League in the 22/23 campaign.

Through all the criticism, however, there seems to be a question asking if Rashford has become a victim of his own success. Having played pivotal roles in the success of United through the years as some have suggested it was his goals that single-handedly gave United Champions League football in the 22/23 season. Rashford has had an immense impact for the Reds during his time at Old Trafford and his performances and goals have set unprecedented expectations, allowing room for criticism.

Rashford burst onto the scene in 2015 with a brace on his debut in a tale that is now folklore amongst fans. As a product of the famed United Academy, it would allow the young star to be adored by the fan base and quite rapidly become a fan favourite. The scintillating performances continued through the many managers who would take charge at Old Trafford as the showboating winger would captivate and lead United to silverware under Jose Mourinho. Winning the Europa League and League Cup whilst playing a part in both.

Fast forward to 2024 and Rashford has a total of 136 goals and 66 assists to his tally in the red shirt with a whole host of memorable moments. The Cristiano Ronaldo-esque goal against Liverpool at Old Trafford to scoring a scorcher in the Manchester derby in 23/24. Although last season is one he’d be looking to forget it should be seen as a blip rather than a downfall. Eight years in Manchester and the majority have been filled with brilliance. Were you to view him for what he has brought rather than what he hasn’t you’d begin to appreciate and applaud the talent.

Now at the age of 26 Rashford aims to continue flourishing at United. Through all the speculation he has remained adamant in his role and responsibility as he looks to help guide one of the best teams in the world back to their glory days.

A season with huge expectations for himself and the club awaits…
