Marcus Rashford has won Manchester United’s Player of the Month award for December following an impressive run of form that has seen him score three goals in as many games.
United’s no.10 was voted as the winner following a poll on the official club app. Casemiro (32%) and Luke Shaw (4%) both ended December with some fine performances in the midfield and the defence respectively, but Rashford swept the award away with a majority 64% of the votes.
Obviously, due to the World Cup in Qatar, club football only returned towards the end of the month, so there was a shorter range of player performances to choose from. Rashford has proved to be the pick of the bunch since the restart, though, scoring in every game so far.
The England international scored the first of those goals in the Carabao Cup fourth-round clash at home to Burnley on December 21st when he carried the ball with pace from his own half on the right-hand side before unleashing a clinical strike into the bottom corner.
He was then able to fire his side in front after getting on the end of a clever routine from a corner against Nottingham Forest on December 27th, managing to set up Anthony Martial shortly after to double The Reds’ lead inside that first half at the Theatre of Dreams.
The 25-year-old ended the month with a match-winning goal away at Molineux against Wolves; after a sharp one-two with Bruno Fernandes on the left flank, he bundled the ball home after a bit of good fortune to give his side a hard-fought away win on New Year’s Eve. He could have scored another following his introduction at half-time, but VAR ruled out his second for handball as it was shown to have deflected in off his arm.
The good form continued into 2023 as well, with the pacey winger managing to bag against Bournemouth with a tap in following a generous assist from Fernandes in the final minutes.
Rashford’s December coup follows Player of the Month awards for Lisandro Martinez (August), Christian Eriksen (September), Casemiro (October) and Alejandro Garnacho (November).
Congratulations to Rashford and long may this scintillating goalscoring form continue.
