Match Preview: Manchester United vs Newcastle United

Manchester United vs Newcastle 21 february 2021

Manchester United vs Newcastle United | Premier League | Old Trafford | KO 19:00 GMT | BT Sport

Manchester United find themselves in a strange run of form at the moment.

At times, they seem unbeatable, for instance, against Southampton and most recently Real Sociedad, where they won 9-0 and 4-0 respectively.

However, at other times, they struggle, losing against Sheffield United and drawing against West Bromwich Albion for instance.

United’s inconsistence is what has cost them a shot at the Premier League title, but they need to find some form of consistency to make the second placed spot their own.

The next challenge on the race for second place comes in the form of Newcastle United. The Magpies visit Old Trafford on Sunday evening on a poor run of form, find themselves 17th in the table, and are in a real relegation battle with Fulham this season.

Paul Pogba is still unavailable for the hosts and will be the biggest miss; he is expected to miss a number of key matches, potentially including fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester City, whilst Phil Jones is once again out.

Both Edinson Cavani and Donny Van de Beek missed Thursday’s clash against Real Sociedad and did not travel with the squad to Turin.

Speaking ahead of the Newcastle match, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explained that they are both still doubts for Sunday’s match.

“I don’t know how Donny and Edinson will be” he said.

“They’ve got a chance, I think” he added.

Cavani offers United something different to Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood in attack, so would be missed if he were unavailable.

Scott McTominay appeared to pick up a knock in mid-week, but it is unclear whether he will make it into the squad on Sunday.

Steve Bruce’s side are desperate for a change in fortunes; they look destined to be stuck in a relegation scrap for the rest of the season.

They travel to Old Trafford without defender Fabian Schar and forward Callum Wilson, who are both out with long-term injuries, but have no other concerns.

With just two wins in their last ten, The Magpies will be hopeful that their boss can get one over his former club.
