Match Preview: Manchester United vs Sheffield United

Manchester United vs Sheffield United | Premier League | Old Trafford | KO 20:15 | BT Sport

Manchester United are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup, having beaten rivals Liverpool 3-2 at the weekend in an impressive display.

Their attention now turns back to the Premier League, where they face strugglers Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, knowing a win will send them back to the top of the table, albeit having played a game more than Manchester City.

How do Manchester United Look?

Marcus Rashford headed straight down the tunnel, when he was substituted off against Jurgen Klopp’s side on Sunday, causing concern for United fans.

Following the game, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that the forward would need a knee scan before any more information would be known.

Ahead of this match, Solskjaer thankfully announced that there was no major damage done to Rashford, and that he “is available” for Wednesday’s clash, going on to say that the squad is “looking strong, which is a good place to be in”.

Victor Lindelöf started at the back, alongside Harry Maguire, against Liverpool, but Eric Bailly will also be an option against Sheffield United.

The happy medium of rotation that Solskjaer has found with Bailly and Lindelöf in recent weeks has been impressive, keeping them both happy with their playing time, whilst also protecting the injury prone Ivorian from picking up another knock.

David de Gea is expected to return to the starting eleven, having missed out at the weekend, most likely because the manager sees Dean Henderson as his ‘cup goalkeeper’.

The Blades impressed last season, achieving a ninth-place finish with their somewhat revolutionary style of overlapping centre backs.

This season, however, Chris Wilder’s side are struggling.

They sit rock bottom in the Premier League, with just one win, five points on the board, and are twelve points from safety.

Their relegation back to the Championship seems inevitable.

Sheffield United will potentially be without nine first team players for Wednesday nights match, making Manchester United vast favourites for the game.

Key Stats

The away side have just five points at the halfway mark in the season.

The record low number of points in Premier League history is 11, meaning that if their second half season is as bad as their first, Sheffield United will finish the season as the worst side in history, with 10 points.

Prediction

Manchester United 3-0 Sheffield United. Goals from Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani.
