Match Review: Manchester United 1-1 (7-8) Middlesbrough

Manchester United 1-1 (7-8) Middlesbrough | FA Cup 4th round

Manchester United crash out of the FA Cup after being beaten on penalties by Championship side Middlesbrough.

Despite dominating proceedings at Old Trafford United were unable to build on Jadon Sancho’s opener. Numerous missed chances and a blundered Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in normal time resulted in a controversial Boro equaliser. Duncan Watmore literally played a hand in the equaliser as the ball accidentally brushed off his left hand, controlled and played onto Matt Crooks to slot away.

United’s continued to huff and puff but ultimately extra time led to penalties and Anthony Elanga unfortunately failed.

Here’s how each player performed with a rating out of 10:

Goalkeeper and defence

Dean Henderson: 4

Henderson made a couple of good saves but made no difference in the penalty shoot-out.

Luke Shaw: 4

Shaw had a decent performance throughout the 90. However, he didn’t make any significant impact.

Harry Maguire: 4

A good performance from Maguire.

Raphael Varane: 6

Varane was a stand-out performer for United. He defended excellently.

Diogo Dalot: 5

Dalot was impressive – particularly going forward.


Scott Mctominay: 4

Bang average performance from Mctominay. He made no real difference.

Paul Pogba: 6

An excellent comeback performance from Pogba. Hopefully, this continues.

Bruno Fernandes: 4

Bruno missed several key chances. A poor performance by his standards.


Marcus Rashford: 5

Rashford’s impact was limited. However, this wasn’t a terrible performance.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 4

Ronaldo was terrible. He looked completely off the pace. He also missed a penalty during the game.

Jadon Sancho: 7

Great goal from Sancho. He looked lively.

Anthony Elanga: 5

Despite missing his penalty, Elanga worked hard during the game.

Fred: 5

Fred was energetic but didn’t really change the game in United’s favour.

Juan Mata: 5

Mata was surprisingly effective as a substitute, linking up well with his teammates.

Phil Jones: 5

Jones was solid during extra time.
