Match Review : Manchester United vs FC Astana
Manchester United have opened their Europa League campaign with a hard fought win against FC Astana.
Sergio Romero: 6
Romero largely had nothing to do and was in the most part unchallenged throughout the game.
Diogo Dalot: 7
Diogo Dalot was one our better players today as he marched down the wing at every opportunity. Put in some rather wasteful crosses but the desire he showed after an injury has to be commended.
Axel Tuanzebe: 7
Manchester United are now well stacked in terms of quality in the centre-back position. Axel today showed a maturity in his game. From being in a position last season where we lacked quality at centre half to now where we have three competent defenders to fill that position.
Phil Jones: 6
Phil Jones has a relatively quiet game. An early lapse in concentration led to a half-chance for Astana early on but other than that he grew throughout the game and kept things simple.
Marcos Rojo: 7
Marcos Rojo today started only his second game under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. You wouldn’t have thought that after today. Granted the level of opposition was poor but the Argentinian really enjoyed his playtime. Great performance!
Nemanja Matic: 6
Matic was another one that was quiet today. Manchester United’s Captain tonight’s kept played it safe when he had the ball and was barely called on defensively, which is expected from a defensive midfielder against a side like FC Astana.
Fred: 7
Fred continued his good from the Premier League. Nobody on the pitch created more chances than the Brazilian. Hopefully, his good form can continue against West Ham.
Angel Gomes: 7
Gomes made his full debut for Manchester United. In that performance, we were able to see some real glimpses of the player he can become. Angel’s quick feet and mind went along way in providing an attacking impetus today – more game time is needed for him.
Tahith Chong: 5
Chong’s performance today has led to a lot of people questioning whether he is ready to come in and be a useful option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer right now. He is 19 going on 20 and this season is make or break for him and maybe he would have benefitted from a loan. However, that being said I would like to see him continue to get playtime.
Marcus Rashford: 6
Marcus Rashford’s way wood finishing is going to be a problem for us going forward. The Englishman’s erratic finishing could have cost us the game today and in terms of finishing he does seem to be behind Greenwood. If Solskjaer is going to play him every week he will need to repay that trust.
Mason Greenwood: 8
Mason Greenwood has now become Manchester United’s youngest ever European goal scorer. A record previously held by George Best and Marcus Rashford. The finish alone was enough for him to merit man of the match, moved the ball like a man well beyond his years. A moment and game to savor for the 17-year-old.
