Match Review : Southampton VS Manchester United

Southampton VS. Manchester United finishes 1-1. Manchesster United drop points in another uninspiring performance. Our same problem remains – a lack of clear cut oppurtunities being created. As a team when we concede from a position of strength that belief to go again and get 3 points has seemed to dissapear. The main problem with Manchester United at the moment is that we don’t have a plan B. Conceding goals is part and parcel with the game of football but when we concede you can pretty much tell that the players’ heads drop and we are staring down the barrel of droped points.

David De Gea : 6

David De Gea will be going into the international break scratching his head as to how in 3 games he has largely had nothing to do, he has conceded 4 goals. He was not to blame for the Vestergaard headered goal after making a brilliant reaction save. An average game for De Gea.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka : 8

Wan Bissaka proved his massive character today. He didn’t have the best performance against Palace but he put thaat behind him and came oout today with a collosal performance. No player on the pitch won more tackles (10) or completed more take-ons (3) than Aaron Wan-Bissaka vs. Southampton. One of the players of the month in the Premier League for sure.

Victor Lindelof : 5

Again, Victor Lindelof did not have the best of games. I am not sure whether his frailties are being exposed because he’s partnered with a world class centre-back or he is just in a poor vein of form but today his passing was off and he did not seem comfortable. He was beat in the air by a 6″7 Vestergaard so I wouldn’t criticise him for that, however he was poor all-round for me.

Harry Maguire : 6

Harry Maguire did not put a foot wrong today by any means. However another game goes by where Mancheserr United don’t capitalise on his abilityh in the air. I personally would have sent him up front in the last five minutes and knocked balls up for him, we lacked a presence up front.

Ashley Young : 6

We all know what we get with Ashley Young. Wearing the captains armband today we lacked a leader to bring the boys together and give everyone a boost. However, we know that with Ashley Young and to be fair some of his conservative passing did lead to oppurtunities, average game for him.

Scott McTominay : 7

McTominay has come under some critcism this season because he is “too safe”, personally I think he has been one of our best players this season. He’s consistently been reliable and has not had a bad performance so far. Sometimees not all your players can be Paul Pogba – McTominay is reliable perhaps that is his role.

Paul Pogba : 6

Today in that deep role Paul seemed to be playing terribly, giving away possesion like it was going out of fashion. As I’ve said I think Paul Pogba is wasted in that quaterback role. However, Ole brought on Nemanja Matic to play deep and almost by a miracle Manchester United were on the front foot creating chances. Paul Pogba turned into the focal point of the attack and if Rashford could finish his dinner, he may of had a couple of assists.

Juan Mata : 7

Juan Mata has also come under alot of stick recently, especially after penning a new 3 year deal. For me, what you can never discount is a players’ football IQ. With Mata we all know his days are numbered at the top level but the way he plaayed passes and dictated play in the first half you can see that his intelligence remains. Juan is definitly not someone to start every game but for sure he has his uses.

Andreas Pereira : 6

I called for Pereira to start in a central role, Ole Started on the wing where I don’t think he is as comfortable. For all Andreas’ strengths he cannot beat a man and I think that sort of pace we lacked on the right hand side. I think Pereira is suffering from being thrown about in terms of positions. Coming through, he seemed like a competent number 8/10. We saw Jose play him in a number 6 role and now Ole thinks he is a winger. On one hand there is versitility on the other there’s a young player not settlin in to a single role.

Daniel James : 9

For a player fresh out the Championship, DJ is putting his teammates to shame in terms of workrate and goal output. In reality a £15m Swansea player is now our top goalscorer and my personal player of the month of August. Fair play to Daniel James, showing his quality hope after the international break he can continue his form.

Marcus Rashford : 4

Marcus Rashford was really poor today allowed himself to be bullied by average Southampton centrebacks and did not look up for it. Similar too the Fa Cap final against Chelsea, Marcus Rashford does not have tat natural instinct to be a lone striker. Rashford is a support striker or a wide forward. I am sick of being lied to that the man is a number 9. Yes, he is only 21 but the likes of Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen had that instinct to make up that yard and score scrappy goals. Rashford just does not cut it as a number 9 for me and on the whole cost us this game.

Substitutes

Jesse Lingard : 5

Jesse Lingard did not add anything to the game and wasn’t the right substitution for me. I would have preffered to see Chong come on in his place or Greenwood to get the same length of time that Jesse did. Lingard remains out of form.

Nemanja Matic : 6

On the face of it, Matic being substituted on when your trying to chase a game is a strange substitution. However, he went into the deep position allowing Pogba to get forward and create for that reason alone, I think Matic was an inspired replacement.

Mason Greenwood : 7

I am unsure why Mason Greenwood is not starting games in this Manchester United team. For me he is ready and looking comfortable, Ole seems to be making the wrong decisions.

An international break is now following a poor start to the season, as fans we can only hope these players come back with in the knowledge that we are playing terribly and turn our form around.
