Player Ratings: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester United

Manchester United earn a point against the run of play as Michae Carrick led his side to a point at League leaders Chelsea. The first half wasn’t much of a spectacle from a United perspective but the Reds emerged from the dressing rooms with the bit between their teeth in the second.

A fortuitous Jadon Sancho goal which was the result of poor control from Jorginho put United ahead. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s reckless challenge in the box handed the opposition a penalty which Jorginho slotted away. Chelsea continued to have chances until the death but United also had a fair share of opportunities to steal a point, none more notable than Fred being handed a chance by the Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy which he decided to softly play back into the relieved keepers’ hands.

Here is how each United player performed at the bridge alongside a rating out of 10:

Goalkeeper and Defence

David De Gea: 7

The Spaniard made an important save at the beginning of the match, preventing a clear opportunity for Chelsea. He also shouldn’t be blamed for conceding a penalty.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 4

Wan-Bissaka did not have a good performance. His late reaction in the box leading to the penalty was clumsy and avoidable. The right-back was also a little too sloppy in possession for my liking.

Victor Lindelof: 6

The Swede was solid at the back, working well alongside Bailly. His calm demeanour and ability to read the game aided United’s defence massively.

Eric Bailly: 6

Similarly, Bailly was steady at the back. His pace and strength were particularly effective in negating Chelsea’s attack.

Alex Telles: 5

Telles didn’t make any significant impact upon the game. He seems to struggle defensively and thrives more as an attacking wing-back.

Midfield

Fred: 7

During today’s match, Fred was excellent. His energy was vital in Manchester United regaining possession on several occasions. The tenacity he displayed disrupted the Chelsea midfield on countless occasions.

Scott McTominay: 6

McTominay also put in a good shift. His driving runs and relentless defensive determination certainly contributed towards United’s success in terms of slowing the momentum of Chelsea and preventing them from developing increased control within the midfield and United’s half.

Nemanja Matic: 6

Matic could’ve done more to stamp his authority on the game today, considering his maturity and experience in defensive midfield. He had little positive impact upon the game.

Bruno Fernandes: 5

Bruno was unable to get into his usual stride today the carelessness he displayed at times vs Watford resurfaced. Perhaps this was a consequence of Chelsea’s dominance in possession.

Attack

Jadon Sancho: 7

Sancho’s quick reaction time and immediate pressing off-the-ball allowed him to capitalise on a Chelsea mistake at the back, earning himself a quality and well-deserved first Premier League goal.

Marcus Rashford: 5

Rashford showed some promise throughout the game. However, similarly to Bruno, he couldn’t really get into 2nd gear as a result of United’s lack of possession and build-up play so his performance ultimately suffered.

Substitutes

Cristiano Ronaldo: 5

Ronaldo didn’t have time to mark his usual impact on the game.

Jesse Lingard: 5

Lingard offered an element of energy for United as the game trailed on. However, his genuine impact was limited.

Donny van de Beek: 5

Van de Beek arrived so late in the game, that he hardly got a touch of the ball.
