Player Ratings : FC Astana VS Manchester United
Full Time – FC Astana vs Manchester United – 2-1
Lee Grant: 6
Lee Grant will look back on his full debut for United and question how he conceded 2 goals. He was untested for large parts of the game an to be fair to him he wasn’t to blame for any. Average 6 for The 36 year old.
Defence
Ethan Laird: 7
There has been a lot of hype around Laird since he joined the club from Charlton in 2017. Tonight, despite the loss, he backed that up. Going forward he looked bright, which shows real bravery as well as a willingness. Hopefully, we can see more from him this season.
Axel Tuanzebe: 6
Tuanzebe put in another admirable performance tonight. He commanded the youthful back line well.
Dishon Bernard: 6
Dishon Bernard is another youth player full of promise. He was extremely unlucky to score the own goal, now is the rest of his mentality; does he let it get to him or does he forget about it and keep on improving.
Luke Shaw: 5
Luke Shaw returned from injury after 96 days sidelined and it really showed. He looked off the pace and his position at left back was left void for the first Astana goal. He was unlucky not to get an a second assist but ultimately it wasn’t a great return for Luke Shaw.
Midfield
James Garner: 6.5
James Garner played the deepest of all the Midfielders in a “Michael Carrick” role. Garner’s performance was worthy of that name. I felt he controlled the game well alongside Levitt and also recycled possession efficiently. The young Englishman is definitely one that can look to pin down a place in the first team before the end of the season.
Dylan Levitt: 7
Small in stature, huge in terms of technical ability. Who does that remind you of? A promising debut from the Welshman. Levitt has that natural vision that is a rarity in most midfielders nowadays. It’s clear when he gets the ball, where he wants to make things happen. Another I’d personally like to see more of.
Attack
Jesse Lingard: 7
Jesse Lingard scored his first goal in 28 games with the Captain’s armband on. Being one of the senior members in the team he took on the creative responsibility, something he hasn’t done in recent games he’s been involved in. It was by no means a complete performance but one to build on for Lingard.
Angel Gomes: 6
Angel Gomes showed bright sparks today but I think as we saw with Pereira in the early stages of this season – he is wasted on the wing. Yes, he can make things happen when cutting in, however, I can’t help but feel he would’ve been more effective in a central role.
Tahith Chong: 5
Tahith Chong looked extremely distracted tonight. Every time he was on the ball he would misplace passes or dribble down cul de sacs. Maybe it is another case of contract talks distracting our players.
Mason Greenwood: 6
Mason Greenwood early on showed signs of taking the game by storm but he eventually faded out of the game.
