Player Ratings: Istanbul Basaksehir vs Manchester United
Istanbul Basaksehir vs Manchester United 2-1 | Champions League | Player Ratings
Dean Henderson: 6
The result we got today isn’t the kind of result you hope for on your Champions League debut. To concede twice to some shocking defensive shape was unlucky for Henderson, especially since he had nothing to do.
Defence
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5
A theme we’ve grown to get used to with Wan Bissaka. When we have the impetus to attack his frailties going forward are there for everyone to see. His crossing let us down tonight.
Axel Tuanzebe: 5
Tuanzebe’s defensive display was almost a stark contrast from his showing in Paris. He looked off it. His recovery tackles were brilliant but perhaps his concentration was off, a likely symptom of his stop-start involvement. Tuanzebe was hooked at half time and not many disagreed with that decision.
Harry Maguire: 4
In reality, Harry Maguire needs to do better tonight. Game after game he’s showing the opposite credentials to be a Manchester United captain. Did he play well yes? But that’s all, as a captain you need to make those around you play better and judging by the goals conceded, he failed in that department.
Luke Shaw: 6
Shaw was probably our best overall defender. Unlike Wan Bissaka he’s more comfortable when the team need to keep the ball. He put in a brilliant cross for Anthony Martial’s goal to make it 2-1 at the end of the first half.
Midfield
Nemanja Matic: 4
Matic had a rare poor performance. For Demba Ba’s goal his positioning put him on the back foot which allowed him to get breezed past. The whole defence was to blame for their Hail Mary approach but Matic could have absolved the issue. He moved into centre back at half time as Tuanzebe was substituted.
Donny van de Beek: 7
The blonde haired Dutchman was head and shoulders above any Manchester United player tonight. Playing in a slightly withdrawn role then we’ve seen him in recently he showed a different level to his game. He still maintained his ball possession but also got stuck into to tackles and won the ball back a number of times. He really showed Ole he can be a number 8 in this team, it’s over to Ole now to see what he does going forward.
Bruno Fernandes: 3
Has to be the worst we’ve seen Fernandes play. Nothing came off for him. He did very little in the final third which meant as a team we were flat. He’s certainly a player to be concerned about going into the Everton game.
Attack
Juan Mata: 3
Like Fernandes, Mata’s poor performance meant overall Manchester United achieved very little going forward.
Marcus Rashford: 4
For the most part Rashford was starved of any possession. But when Dr. MBE did get on the ball, he was extremely wasteful.
Anthony Martial: 6
Martial’s performance wasn’t one to shout home about either. His link up play was sloppy and constantly dribbled himself into cul-de-sacs. Saying that, his header was well timed, great finish.
