Manchester United’s 29-game unbeaten run comes to a pitiful end after shipping four at Leicester.

United’s problems came home to roost once again as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side failed to control proceedings. Mason Greenwood put the Reds ahead against the run of play, with an absolute pile driver from 25 yards out. Leicester City were then gifted a goal as a comedy of errors led to a superb finish from Youri Tielemans.

In the second half United seemed to step up the intensity early on but control was the biggest issue. Caglar Soyuncu was the man to put the first spear in the hearts of United fans as he was spotted away Leicester’s second following the pinballing in the box. United replied as Victor Lindelof found the returning Marcus Rashford to make it 2-2. But before the United fans present at the King Power could find their seats after celebrating, David de Gea was picking the ball out of the net as an unmarked Jamie Vardy found the net.

Patson Daka put the final nails in the coffin of United’s morgue-worthy performance with a fourth for Leicester.

Here’s how each United player performed, with a rating out of 10:

David de Gea: 7

Once again, embarrassingly was United’s standout performer. The Spaniard made a number of saves worthy of a clean sheet. Despite the four goals conceded De Gea still shone, a telling reflection of the game.

Defence

Aaron Wan Bissaka: 6

A steady performance from the right-back, early in the first half when United were under the cosh, his willingness to carry the ball helped ease the pressure. While Leicester’s third could be partly his fault as he dived in leaving his position vulnerable, overall he was decent.

Victor Lindelof: 5

When the Swedish captain was bullied physically early on in the game by Jamie Vardy, it was always going to be a long afternoon for Lindelof. That it was, however, his pass to pick out Marcus Rashford for his goal was sublime, something we have seen him do in the past.

Harry Maguire: 2

Back from injury, right into the starting lineup. The captain’s lack of sharpness was there for all to see. His sluggishness was compounded by his nervous response to the King Power’s reception for his return which clearly made him uneasy. His lack of focus that led to Leicester’s equaliser in the first half summed up his whole performance.

Luke Shaw: 4

Shaw is still yet to look himself this season. The England left-back was himself to blame for United’s shakiness in defence.

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: 5

With Fred unable to play due to the kick-off being a matter of hours after his Brazilian side beat Uruguay, this was the chance for the Serbian to step in and stake a claim on the position. United’s lack of control of the game was mainly down to the midfield who failed to press and displayed a lack of mobility overall.

Paul Pogba: 4

Dithered in possession a number of times and was a shell of the player we saw play for France a matter of days ago.

Bruno Fernandes: 5

Fernandes tried but ultimately suffered due to a lack of support while pressing and in possession. He did however go missing for long spells which didn’t help his case.

Attack

Mason Greenwood: 6

After his well-taken goal, he did very little to impact proceedings.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 3

Ronaldo’s role in the defeat perhaps goes a lot further than United fans would like to admit. His reluctance to press results in United not completing pressing actions all around the pitch. United’s lack of press allowed United to be cut through effortlessly. Ronaldo did have some chances but failed to take them.

Jadon Sancho: 4

Sancho played within himself once again. The performance of the team did not help but you couldn’t help but feel he could be doing more while in possession. However, that may be a result of coaching.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford: 6

Rashford’s return was like a breath of fresh air. He looked sharp and earned his goal with a well timed run in behind.

Scott Mctominay: 4
