Player Ratings: Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United | Premier League | Player Ratings

David de Gea: 6

The second consecutive game where De Gea has had to do very little, a testament to the teams strong defensive effort.

Defence

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6

The right-back handled the threat of Sadio Mane well and was better going forward. On a number of occasions, his quick passing into midfield allowed United to impose themselves in the game and take a foothold by keeping possession better.

Victor Lindelöf: 8

For many, Lindelof coming back into the side was a travesty considering Eric Bailly’s recent form but the Swede silence his critics. Liverpool’s attackers were always going to cause a threat but the aptly named Iceman kept cool making several clearances and blocks.

Harry Maguire: 7

Despite one shaky moment with the ball at his feet, giving away possession, United’s captain was solid. His highlight was a well-timed block on a Firmino shot at the back post.

Luke Shaw: 9

Luke Shaw was Manchester United’s Man of the Match without a doubt. Defensively he ensured Mo Salah was ineffective, which is no easy feat. And going forward he contributed to the biggest chance of the game with a low cross which Fernandes shot into Alisson. Shaw can come out of the game with his head held high.

Midfield

Fred: 5

Fred’s job which he usually does well is to be a nuisance in United’s midfield, snapping at ankles winning the ball back quickly to inspire a transition. Against Liverpool, he seemed to continually get alluded by the opposition midfielders. The Brazilian is also prone to diving in which left the defence exposed at times.

Scott McTominay: 6

McTominay also struggled with the efficient energy of the Liverpool midfield in the first half. In the second, he provided a stronger defensive shield for the back four. However, the Scottish international’s passing was extremely sloppy.

Bruno Fernandes: 4

Bruno Fernandes has an extremely underwhelming performance. Fernandes was given very little space by Liverpool and that seemed to get to him. Every time he was in possession he resorted to playing Hollywood passes that would invite pressure. A night to forget for the Portuguese midfielder.

Attack

Anthony Martial: 7

With Martial’s injury in midweek, he couldn’t play 90 minutes. However, the time he did spend on the pitch he was United’s key threat. Completing six take ons, Liverpool struggled to deal with him and you may argue that had he finished the game, United would have come away with maximum points.

Marcus Rashford: 4

Rashford was feeding on scraps for the majority of the game, but his decision making let him down. The key move that everyone will refer to is his reluctance to slip Edinson Cavani in for a one on one on the counter. The forward also failed to time his runs at times resulting in him being caught offside on many occasions.

Paul Pogba: 7

He played out of position but showed up. His work for the team was immense going both ways. He should’ve taken his chance towards the end of the game but that can’t take away from his overall shift for the team.

Substitutes

Edinson Cavani: 7

Came on and provided a different dimension to United’s performance as a true focal point. His class showed but he was unlucky not to receive a wealth of chances.

Mason Greenwood: n/a
