Manchester United fail to inspire in their first Premier League game since their 7-0 thumping at Anfield.

Erik ten Hag’s Reds have now dropped points for the second game in a row as they looked to be dragged into the battle for top 4. League leaders Arsenal sit 16 points ahead of them while Manchester City are 11 points above them. Meanwhile top 4 chasers Newcastle and Tottenham edge closer to Manchester United. A red card from Casemiro shortly before the end of the first half made life difficult for the home side but they were able to keep a clean sheet

Here’s a rundown on how the players performed with each receiving a rating out of 10.

Goalkeeper and Defence

David de Gea: 7

Made some great saves that helped United stay level including two from Theo Walcott

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6.5

Wan-Bissaka wasn’t outstanding today but his highlight was a goal line clearance they kept United in the game. Despite a lack of quality attacking wise was a decent performance today.

Lisandro Martinez: 7.5

Was great on the ball, a defensive rock today. The Argentine also showed off his wide range of passing and stepped up defensively when United were down to 10 men.

Raphael Varane: 7.5

An excellent defensive performance and like his partner Martinez he kept up United’s defensive prowess after Casemiro’s red card.

Luke Shaw: 7

Excellent both attacking and defensive wise. Nearly had an assist after teeing up Bruno Fernandes who hit the post. Continues his great run of form this season despite United failing to win this game.

Casemiro: 5

His red card will unfortunately be the talking point of this game. His tackle was a little rash although the debate will rage on as to whether it was a red card or not, but the fact is that decision potentially cost United the 3 points. Disappointing.

Bruno Fernandes: 5.5

Was unlucky not to score with his shot in the second half hitting the post. However, his performance overall left much to be desired and unfortunately Bruno just wasn’t effective today.

Jadon Sancho: 6.5

Normally in on the wing on either side, Sancho played centrally today. In the first half he was lively and should’ve had an assist but fizzled out in the second half when United were down to 10 men. Promising signs that he can thrive in this new position though.

Attack

Antony: 5

Was very limited today and predictable with the ball. Southampton were able to keep him quiet and he was eventually subbed off for a more direct winger.

Wout Weghorst: 5

Was wasteful with the chances he had, much like his usual performances in a United shirt. Was swapped out for McTominay when United went down to 10 men.

Rashford: 6

Looked threatening here and there but wasted his chances in the game including an opportunity to square the ball to Weghorst for an easy tap in goal.

Substitutes

Scott McTominay: 6

Alejandro Garnacho: 5

Facundo Pellistri: 6

Fred: N/A

Harry Maguire: N/A
