Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-2 Brighton
Manchester United’s parade is rained on at the first possible opportunity by Brighton who spoil Erik ten Hag’s Old Trafford inauguration.
United failed to thrive off a rampant atmosphere and found themselves a goal down after half an hour. Nine minutes later, Pascal Gross had his second as United’s defence was at sixes and sevens.
United bundled in a response in the second half after the introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo. The ball trickled off Diogo Dalot’s back and caused Alexis Mac Allister to turn the ball into his own net.
Here’s how each United player performed with a rating out of 10 as the Reds get off to a rocky start.
Goalkeeper and defence
David de Gea: 5
Distribution is another attribute that will be looked at closely this season. Ten Hag’s sides are teams that start attacks from the back and the goalkeeper must be more than a shot-stopper. De Gea left a lot to be desired in that regard.
Diogo Dalot: 6
The Portuguese right-back was one of the better players in red this afternoon. His harrying and willingness led to United’s goal and he’s one that looked at it from the first whistle to the last.
Harry Maguire: 6
United’s captain could be seen looking unsure in possession at times. Some of the dead for that was out of his control, but overall he did look more steady than he did towards the latter stages of last season.

The new centre-back signing showed some signs of real quality, but during other spells, he clearly lacked the know-how of how to stay solid in a new league.
Luke Shaw: 5
A lacklustre performance from the left-back. Seemed lethargic both on and off the ball and he didn’t obviously impact the game in any capacity.
Midfield
Scott Mctominay: 3
Every time Mctominay seemed to get on the ball, disaster ensued. That was probably the reason why he seemed to hide when his centre-backs were in possession.

Unlike Mctominay, Fred’s performance was full of effort and desire but unfortunately, he just isn’t up to standard to be starting for United as the Reds transition to a new style of play.
Bruno Fernandes: 5
Old habits die hard and Bruno Fernandes embodied that. He seemed rushed in possession, a nuisance in his game that was accentuated by the guile of Christian Eriksen alongside him. A disappointing display from Fernandes.
Attack
Jadon Sancho: 5
Oddly looked off the pace despite an electric pre-season. We can give him the benefit of the doubt after his illness but he didn’t impact proceedings.

A cut above the rest in terms of quality, we can only hope that he doesn’t get infected by the low standard of the rest of the side.
Marcus Rashford: 4
A new fresh start from Rashford is what we were promised but it was more of the same. Looked unsure on the ball, and snatched at chances that could’ve won back the game for United.
Substitutes
Cristiano Ronaldo: 6
Showed signs of quality adding an extra dynamic to the attack.
