Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-0 Newcastle United

Manchester United have just beaten Newcastle United 2-0 at Wembley to secure their first piece of silverware since their Europa League win in 2017 under manager Jose Mourinho.
Now less than 9 months into Erik Ten Hag’s regime at Old Trafford the Red Devils have won their first trophy under the Dutch manager, the Carabao Cup. Goals from Casemiro and and own goal from Botman secured the Reds this win.
Here’s a rundown on how the players performed with each receiving a rating out of 10.
Goalkeeper and Defence
David De Gea: 8
The Spaniard surpassed his joint record with Peter Schmeichel today becoming Manchester United’s record holder for clean sheets with 181. He made valuable saves including an early one from Allan Saint-Maximim and as well as that his punches and sweeper keeping was on display.
Diogo Dalot: 5.5
Not the greatest game for Diogo Dalot and he was rightly hooked off at halftime for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. After an early yellow card for a challenge on Saint-Maximin the Portuguese right-back was a lot more cautious with his defending, allowing Newcastle to pile pressure on his side.
Raphael Varane: 8
A solid display from the seasoned defender. The French international helped shut down Newcastle’s attacking threat and despite the pressure, they were able to put on in periods of the game Varane kept his head and delivered a professional performance.

His usual resolute performance was on display today. His partnership with Varane continues to be solid as the recent World Cup winner was a key part of United’s solid defensive unit.
Luke Shaw: 8
Luke Shaw showcased both sides to his game today. His pinpoint delivery to Casemiro from a free kick created the first goal and he was defensively strong when United needed him to be.
Midfield
Casemiro: 8.5
The seasoned Brazilian midfielder was the key man for United today. Headed home the first goal and finished off the immovable defensive spine of himself, Varane and Martinez. His performances since he joined the club continue to showcase his world-class ability. Deservedly MOTM.

A little sloppy in possession and mis-hit a good chance at the edge of the box, Fred’s energy levels and work rate were still a good asset to the team today.
Bruno Fernandes: 7
Like Fred. Bruno’s delivery and passing wasn’t at it’s best today but he still posed a creative threat and worked hard for United. Nothing outstanding but a decent performance, nonetheless.
Attack
Antony: 7.5
Causing problems on the right-hand side and displaying some flashy footwork Antony helped United out wide, stretching the pitch and irritating the Newcastle defence.

Rashford had a great game today. Forced Botman into scoring an own goal and looked a handful whenever he received the ball. Could’ve had a little more quality in the final third but he continues to be United’s most dangerous attacker.
Wout Weghorst: 7.5
Weghorst had arguably his best performance in a United shirt today. Was involved in the second goal and had some good link-up play and attacks during the course of the match.
