Dean Henderson: 6

All eyes were on Henderson going into the game as he got the nod ahead of de Gea despite the Spaniard being fit. Henderson seemed to let it get to his head as he did look shaky at times but Brighton failed to test the Englishman enough.

Defence

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 4

The right-back had an extremely sub-par performance. From the off, he could be seen giving away possession and the blame for the Brighton goal has to be at his door.

Victor Lindelof: 5

The Swede isn’t void of any blame for Danny Welbeck’s goal. He found himself ball watching in a similar fashion to Sevilla in the Europa League Semifinal last season. However, Lindelof did get involved in some good things going forward trying to make stuff happen with balls over the top.

Harry Maguire: 7

United’s captain carried his form from the international games with England. He dominated at the back despite a dubious penalty decision. His last-ditch tackles and blocks kept United in the game to go on and get the victory. Leading from the back.

Luke Shaw: 6

Shaw looked positive going forward with some good passes and direct dribbling but defensively left a lot to be desired.

Midfield

Fred: 6

A performance where we didn’t notice Fred a lot, which is probably a good thing. There were fewer rash decisions on the ball in terms of passing and he went about his performance quietly yet strongly.

Paul Pogba: 6

In his more favoured position, Pogba managed to assist the winning goal. His overall performance looked as though he lacked fitness though as he failed to get to grips with the intensity of the game.

Bruno Fernandes: 7

Fernandes had to deal with constant pressure from Yves Bissouma. And in the first half, the Malian midfielder got the better of him. In the second, more space appeared and Fernandes took control of the game assisting the first and playing a big role in the second.

Attack

Marcus Rashford: 6

Rashford was a spectator for large parts of the game but when called upon, took his finish with great aplomb.

Edinson Cavani: 4

The Uruguayan saw very little of the ball and lacked the intensity and pressing that we’ve seen from him in the past. A disappointing night for the striker.

Mason Greenwood: 7

Much like Rashford, Greenwood’s performance wasn’t anything to merit a great deal of praise, he lost the ball a lot and failed to get involved. However, he did get his goal that was the difference.
