Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-4 Liverpool

Manchester United put in a disastrous defensive display as a rampant Liverpool run riot at Old Trafford.

United took the early lead but capitulated soon after going in at halftime 2-1 down. Liverpool scored quickly after halftime and despite Marcus Rashford clawing one back, Mo Salah’s goal at the death put the game to bed.

Dean Henderson: 4

This was the kind of night you don’t want when you’re trying to stake your claim as United’s number one. He was ultimately to blame for arguably three of the goals, a definite night to forget.

Defence

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7

Under the stern gaze of the England manager, the right-back painted himself in glory being the outstanding defender in United’s side. He was defensively sound and tried to impact the game going forward to the best of his ability.

Eric Bailly: 5

Although it wasn’t an awful performance it didn’t fill anyone with conviction. His typo rashness almost led to a penalty that was controversially dismissed. Bailly ultimately failed to dominate at the back.

Victor Lindelof: 5

Lindelof was playing in an unfamiliar position at the left side of the back two. It showed on a number of occasions as he was reluctant to play out from the back on his left foot which hindered United’s attacks.

Luke Shaw: 5

The left-back dithering on the ball led to Liverpool’s third. Shaw’s overall quality wasn’t great he seemed flat and lethargic, unable to complete a pass. Disappointing.

Midfield

Scott McTominay: 3

One of McTominay’s poorest performances this season. The midfielder almost allowed the game to drift him by with uninventive passing and an unwillingness to track runners.

Fred: 2

Started the game brightly but his performance quickly descended into misplaced passes and a lack of concentration.

Bruno Fernandes: 7

The man with the armband looked bright. Every time he was on the ball he looked to affect the game, got his goal and played a huge part in United’s second.

Paul Pogba: 5

Didn’t affect the game as much as you would like, Trent Alexander-Arnold seemed to have the Frenchman’s number when he was on the left.

Attack

Edinson Cavani: 6

Was absolutely starved of any quality service. Although an opportunity arose for himself that he should’ve taken when he beat Allison to the ball but he put it wide. Other than that, no real chances.

Marcus Rashford: 5

Looked poor on the ball and seemed to be holding the team back offensively on the right-hand side. He then moved to his favoured left where he was able to get his goal.
