Manchester United 3-2 Atalanta | Champions League Group Stage
Manchester United come from behind for the second consecutive Champions League game to beat Atalanta in a crucial group stage tie.
United quickly found themselves under the cosh as Atalanta piled onto the pressure which already existed on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shoulders. Atalanta found themselves two goals up within the first half an hour at Old Trafford.
In the second half, the response was from the players to fight for their manager was there for all to see. The energy and the runners in behind, United were rampant. Marcus Rashford found the net, which was soon followed by captain Harry Maguire slotting the ball away in a striker’s fashion. Then when United needed him, Cristiano Ronaldo did what Ronaldo does – win matches.
Here’s how each player performed as United topped the group:
David De Gea: 7
De Gea made a couple of great saves, particularly in a one-on-one encounter- keeping us in the game. Dave, as always, saves!
Luke Shaw: 7
Luke Shaw’s positioning for the first goal conceded was poor. Despite this, he redeemed himself with a fantastic, crossed assist for Ronaldo. Sublime!
Harry Maguire: 8
Similarly, Maguire- although at fault for the second goal- made up for it with an excellent (poacher-like) finish inside the area.Embed from Getty Images
Victor Lindelof: 6
Lindelof was relatively solid today. A decent performance from the iceman.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 7
A thoroughly impressive performance from Wan-Bissaka today. His forward play was extremely effective and he played a large contributing factor in United’s dominance, within the second half.
Fred had a fairly average game today. Although I would say, he didn’t really do anything wrong in the second half. Despite this, our midfield was tremendously open and easily dominated in the first half.
Scott McTominay: 6
Scott was also good today, making some strong tackles and efficient runs through the centre of the park. However, our midfield in the first half was overrun and this must be improved.Embed from Getty Images
Bruno Fernandes: 6
Fernandes managed to bag a top-class assist today for Rashford’s goal. Nobody can doubt his commitment and work ethic- he never gives up and is constantly on the move. This was evident today. He genuinely epitomises what a Manchester United player should be.
Marcus Rashford: 8
It’s great to see Marcus back in the mix. He now has two goals in his last two appearances, returning to fine form. He kept United in the game today and was a key catalyst in their comeback victory. To add, his finish was clinical, especially considering the difficult angle from which he took the shot. I, like so many others, am so proud of Rashford and hopefully, he continues to keep doing what he does best!
Cristiano Ronaldo: 8
Ronaldo proved once again tonight why he is such a valuable player for United. His headed goal, which won them the game, was a thing of beauty- perfectly executed. He is such an important player and will surely continue to perform as he does so regularly. Viva Ronaldo!Embed from Getty Images
Mason Greenwood: 6
Mason was quiet today. However, he still did a good job out on the wing. The young superstar is now so consistent that when he has an average game, it is noticeable! This is only a good thing though. There can be no doubt that Greenwood will continue to elevate his game, week in week out.
Jadon Sancho: 6
Sancho was unable to really make an impact today. He was tidy in possession, producing some neat, passing exchanges with those around him, and helping United see out the game.
Paul Pogba: 7
Pogba was immaculate upon coming on. His technical ability is on par with anyone else in the world, on his day- Such a striking display from the Frenchman.
Edison Cavani: 7
Cavani’s work rate is unmatched. The way he chases down every last ball is nothing short of inspiring and this relentlessness was a key factor in aiding United in victory today.
Nemanja Matic: 6
Matic came on very late, in order to help run the clock down and tidy up the midfield. He didn’t really have much of a say in the game overall.
