Player Ratings: Manchester United 4-1 Newcastle United

Manchester United take all three points as Cristiano Ronaldo steals the show on his return to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo’s first of the day came late in the first half. In the second, Newcastle took the game to the reds and found an equaliser through Manquillo. The euphoria of Newcastle rained on the Old Trafford parade lasted only moments as Ronaldo sublimely put away his second. A superb strike from Bruno Fernandes and a goal from the freshly introduced Jesse Lingard sealed Newcastle’s fate.

Here’s how each player performed on a historic day in English football.

David de Gea: 7

David de Gea played a huge hand in Fernandes’ goal with some intelligent distribution. Away from that, his highlights consisted of some solid saves.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 5

While the right-back continues to show his strengths defensively, you can’t help but be underwhelmed by his offensive contribution considering the occasion and calibre of the attacker he’d be serving.

Raphael Varane: 7

A home debut in the cauldron that was Old Trafford. As his experience suggests, he was unfazed, dominating in the air and remaining controlled with the ball on the deck. Frightening to think that there is still a lot to come from him as he continues bedding in.

Harry Maguire: 6

An equally dominant central defensive performance to Varane. However, his diving in did leave himself stranded and his teammates with the small matter of trying to get back ahead after it led to Newcastle’s equaliser.

Luke Shaw: 6

A solid performance from Shaw. It’s a genuine testament to the left-back that he’s been rated averagely for his performance due to the high standards he’s set himself in the last 12 months.

Nemanja Matic: 7

Matic may have been a little slow in possession but you cannot deny the sense of calm he provides the midfield. The lack of robustness is an issue, one that should’ve been solved in the summer.

Paul Pogba: 8

Dictated the tempo of the game, ensured the ball was kept ticking, and was switched with intent. He also topped off a fine display with two assists.

Jadon Sancho: 7

Sancho hasn’t really got going this season but today he showed glimpses of what he’s about. His close touch control just attracts defenders which opens space for his teammates. His own contributions will come but he is looking good.

Mason Greenwood: 6

Greenwood was another that drifted in and out of the game but it was his assist that gave Ronaldo his first on his return. Granted it came in an unusual fashion, deflecting off the keeper, but it was typical of Greenwood‘s consistent accuracy.
