Manchester United 6-2 AS Roma | Europa League Semifinal 1st Leg

Manchester United edge closer to a first cup final under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 6-2 battering of AS Roma. Sensational performances from Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, and Edinson Cavani move the Reds closer to European glory.

David de Gea: 6

A strange night for De Gea. Roma had very few opportunities but the ones they did have they took. There was very little the Spaniard could do.

Defence

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6

The right-back was caught out of position for Roma’s second but continued on to have a solid performance. As Roma offered little going forward, Wan-Bissaka’s highlights came further up the pitch as he played a strong hand in Cavani’s second goal.

Victor Lindelof: 6

Under the Roman press, Lindelof did well with agile turns under pressure. The threat of the likes of Mkhitaryan and Pellegrini running in behind did cause the centre-back a few issues.

Harry Maguire: 6

Barring the second Roma goal where the captain could’ve arguably done better he was strong at the back. His passes forward into the advanced full-backs were sublime.

Luke Shaw: 8

A rampant display from Luke Shaw on that left hand side. His interplay with Paul Pogba allowed United to have that strong foothold in the game.

Midfield

Scott McTominay: 5

A tale of two halves for McTominay, he began the game getting overrun as Mkhitaryan ran him ragged. He did grow into the game as in the second half he started to gain control of the midfield.

Fred: 6

An average display from the Brazilian who got involved in play quite deep but overall didn’t impact proceedings.

Bruno Fernandes: 10

His performances lately haven’t been good enough in relation to his high standards that we’ve seen. However, vs Roma he showed why he’s up there with the very best this season. His passes were on point along with his positioning and finishing. 10/10.

Attack

Paul Pogba: 10

On a usual night, a player who gives away a penalty to give away an away goal has to be marked down. From the word go he was at it, his elegance on the ball created United’s opener. His quality continued for the whole night, his link-up with Fernandes was phenomenal to watch and his goal was deserved.

Edinson Cavani: 7

Many like myself have argued that there isn’t a great necessity for a number nine in United’s current setup, especially with there being the greater need for reinforcements elsewhere. However, tonight, Cavani showed that a top striker changes the whole dynamic of the creative players who look to provide for him. But also he can provide for them as he showed with two superb assists.

Marcus Rashford: 4

A disappointing performance from Rashford who never truly got into the game on the right wing.

Substitutes

Mason Greenwood: 7

Another well taken goal.

Juan Mata: n/a
