David de Gea: 6
Barring a good save needed to stop a James Ward-Prowse free-kick on the edge of the “D”, the Spaniard has a comfortable night between the sticks. De Gea’s passion when it seemed his clean sheet was under threat was great to see.
Defence
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 10
Aaron Wan-Bissaka player his best football in a Manchester United shirt. He carried on his newly found capability of getting in at the back post, something he showed against Arsenal last time out. Tonight he deserves all the praise, from his goal to his deliveries it really was a brilliant performance.

Lindelöf looked a little suspect at times despite the positive scoreline. Che Adams has him pinned and was in behind him on one occasion. Lucky for the Swede Adams’ relentlessness didn’t bear any fruit.
Harry Maguire: 7
As soon as the Southampton midfielder was dismissed for a terrible tackle on McTominay early on, the skipper came into his element. He was given the freedom of Old Trafford to dribble and progress play. In the first half, he played like an additional midfielder picking passes to help break Southampton down.
Luke Shaw: 9
The only thing that hindered Luke Shaw not being Man of the Match was the fact that he only spent the first half on the pitch. But even then one could argue that playing for 45 minutes creating chances the way he did is symbolic of his great form.
Midfield
Scott McTominay: 8
After feeling the wrath of an awful challenge within the first two minutes McTominay proceeded to dominate the game. He was crucial in helping United keep the ball ticking ready to pounce on Southampton’s mistakes. And pounce they did.

Fred’s slight lapse in concentration put United’s clean sheet in very real danger, and many would argue that the Brazilian was lucky to have VAR disallow the goal. Apart from that however Fred caused some real problems for the Saints’ defence giving them someone else to really think about.
Bruno Fernandes: 8
Did Bruno Fernandes play his best football tonight? No, but what he did do was ensure there was efficiency in his performance. He was more intelligent with his play which was probably aided by United dominating possession. He also managed a couple of assists and got his customary penalty. Great night.
Attack
Marcus Rashford: 7
Rashford was another that can only be judged upon the first half that he played. Alongside Shaw on the left-hand side he caused real issues for Southampton, so many that the forward found himself in the centre of the box to get his goal and on the right to smash in the ball which Bednarek scored an own goal from. Hopefully, this can spur Rashford back into form.

Old Trafford is famous for it’s players who have an air of class around them. Cavani is one of them, he got his first Old Trafford goal and it was well deserved after 45 minutes of hard work.
Mason Greenwood: 7
A quietly brilliant performance from Greenwood got an assist but did drift in and out of the game. When he was in the ball he was dangerous.
Substitutes
Donny van de Beek: 6
Played the full second half but didn’t really get into the game.

Martial came on with something to prove. The Frenchman was electric and his impact was immense getting two goals and winning a penalty. A statement 45 minutes from Martial.
