Player Ratings: Manchester United vs Chelsea

David De Gea: 3
As one of the older statesmen in the squad, 400 appearances, his performance was unacceptable. He doesn’t look confident anymore, for the last 2 years we’ve seen repeats of these mistakes in important games. I’d argue he’s at fault for all 3 goals regardless of any mistakes made by anyone else. David De Gea of 3 years ago saves them all. Hard pill to swallow but it’s true. He’s just not the same.
Defence
Aaron Wan Bissaka: 4
Another nightmare performance from Aaron Wan Bissaka. It seems when the emphasis is on us to regain and maintain possession against a good side like Chelsea he’s technical ability let’s him down. Defensively he did not have a good game, even when he went to ground. Going forward, he was pretty much non existent, a likely result due to our lack of possession.
Victor Lindelöf: 5
As per usual, Lindelof looked extremely shaky. The first Chelsea goal occurred because he was weak up against Giroud. While the blame has to be at De Gea’s door for Mount’s goal, Lindelof was also to blame. The centre backs reluctance to engage and step into a challenge was inexcusable. Saying that, he was one of our better defenders.
Eric Bailly: 6
Before he went of after 40 minutes because of two collisions to the head he was our best defender. He was confident assured and added a bit of his natural flair with flicks. Hopefully he recovers from his injury well.
Harry Maguire: 3
Maguire looked extremely fatigued tonight. His concentration was off and when in possession he dwelled on the ball. Our captains performance was topped off with a goal in his own net to nail the coffin of our FA cup hopes.
Brandon Williams: 5
Will inevitably be blamed for his careless crossfield pass that led to Chelsea’s second. However though it wasn’t a great performance he provided one of our very few attacking outlets on the left hand side.
Midfield
Nemanja Matic: 6
A poorer showing from Matic. He looked like the Matic that seemed to be on his way out from the club earlier this season, too many touches of the ball and hesitating to pass the ball forward.
Fred: 4
Fred was a big factor as to why we didn’t keep the ball today. When he did complete passes it was safe but when he tried to play it didn’t come off. Another poor performance.
Bruno Fernandes: 5.5
Bruno Fernandes didn’t have a good game, his passing was once again over adventurous but he was living off next to nil from the rest of the midfield. Like he always does, he still managed to impact the game with a penalty goal.
Attack
Marcus Rashford: 4
Rashford didn’t get to build on his good recent form with barely any of the ball.
Daniel James: 4
James will probably be another scape goat but he suffered the same way all our attackers did whether they started or came off the bench.
Substitutes
Anthony Martial: 5
Win the penalty that led to the goal with some good trickery but ultimately had very little of the ball.
Paul Pogba: 4.5
A lot of effort in his performance but very little output.
Odion Ighalo: 4.5
Similar to Pogba in terms of effort and getting in behind but the game was long gone as soon as he came on.
Timothy Fosu Mensah: 6
