Player Ratings: Manchester United vs Southampton

Manchester United vs Southampton 2-2 |Player Ratings

David De Gea: 7

A whole lot of the game was played in midfield so De Gea was left with little to do. He conceded 2 goals granted but none were his fault. De Gea’s save for Redmonds opportunity probably ended up saving us a point.

Defence

Aaron Wan Bissaka: 5

Poor performance from our usually consistent Right Back. He had a big part in our equaliser with some good footwork but overall didn’t look solid defensively, giving a foul away.

Victor Lindelöf: 5

A lapse in concentration cost him a possible Man of the Match award. Up until the final phase of play where we conceded, it was one of his better performances, he was solid. However, for Southamptons goal, he’s outmuscled by 5”6 Michael Obafemi, wrong sided and poor defending cost us 3rd.

Harry Maguire: 5.5

Maguire didn’t look comfortable on the ball early on as we played out the back. A few heavy touches, but was solid alongside Lindelof.

Luke Shaw: 8

One of our best players today. This was the type of performance you hope to see more of from Shaw, getting down the line and efficient positivity. His injury ended up leading to our downfall both defensively and offensively. His absence perhaps showed his underrated importance in this team.

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: 6

By far his worst post lockdown performance and that is ultimately down to his the high bar he’s set. Granted he relieved pressure on the back four but he also contributed to the shakiness early on. Matic wasn’t terrible but he wasn’t the midfield commander we’ve seen.

Paul Pogba: 6

Pressed off the ball. Southampton cleverly targeted Pogba as our key instigator. Every time he was on the ball he was under pressure which led to our back four resultant you being put under pressure. Strangely he was substituted after an hour of play, a decision I’m sure Ole looks back at with regret.

Bruno Fernandes: 6

Paul Pogba’s performance inadvertently effected Bruno’s, not something everyone will notice. The link between Pogba and Fernandes has been the cornerstone of our success. As a result, if you stop the link between them, you take a large part out of Manchester United. Saying that, cream rises to the top always and he still managed a goal contribution. Overall a quiet game from Bruno.

Attack

Marcus Rashford: 7.5

Rashford looked at it today, his sharpness and willingness to beat a man was back. He put Kyle Walker-Peters under immense pressure with his directness. The forward also managed a goal which evidently did wonders for his confidence. Like everyone he petered off towards the end when we needed to kill the game off.

Mason Greenwood: 6

Greenwood has honest quality and I think your lying if you didn’t see that at times today. But I felt his passing was very safe and he didn’t really get a foothold in the game.

Anthony Martial: 9

Complete strikers performance! He’s been criticised by certain pundits with a scouse allegiance this week unfairly. However, his goal and assist were certainly 2 fingers up to his doubters. Early on he missed the chance to put us ahead in the first few minutes but he made up for that with a good finish to make it 2-1 at the time. His solo run in the second half deserved a goal that he didn’t ultimately get due to a way wood finish.

Substitutes

Fred: 4.5

Simply shocking performance from Fred. He came on for Pogba and you’d think the instructions were to keep that ball better than Pogba did, instead he did a lot of running for 45 minutes. Very disappointing, had an opportunity to stake a claim in this winning side but ultimately blew it.

Brandon Williams: 7

The Left back came on for Shaw and defensively looked great, as we were barely in possession he didn’t do much going forward but in the time he was on was solid. Hopefully his head injury isn’t something serious or keeps him out for long.

McTominay: 6
