Manchester United lost their first game back after the international break with a 2-0 result to Newcastle away from home. This loss means Manchester United have now gone three premier league games without a win or a goal. It also means United have essentially been dragged into the battle for top 4 as Newcastle leapfrogged into 3rd with Spurs potentially able to overtake them as well with their game against Everton tomorrow. And although United will play their game in hand against Brentford this Wednesday it means that Erik Ten Hag may need to start prioritising competitions as the games this month are coming thick and fast

Here’s a rundown on how the players performed with each player receiving a rating out of 10.

Goalkeeper and Defence

David de Gea: 6

Made good saves that kept the scoreline respectable but was poor in distribution again today.

Diogo Dalot: 4

A pretty poor performance from the Portuguese defender today. Newcastle’s opener was a result of him being caught out at the back post and the right-hand side of United’s defence was often stretched as a result of his poor defending.

Raphael Varane: 7

A decent performance from Varane, he made some solid tackles and drives up the pitch but could’ve done better for Newcastle’s opener from Joe Willock. Overall, he was average today.

Lisandro Martinez: 7

The recent World Cup winner was decent today, he looked very good on the ball and made some important tackles but like the rest of the United defence allowed a lot of pressure on goal.

Luke Shaw: 6.5

Like Varane, Shaw largely had an average performance. There was a bit of decent link up play on the left hand side and he was decent defensively but questions need to be asked about whether he could’ve done more to stop Callum Wilson’s late goal.

Sabitzer: 5.5

Was lively in the first half and involved in build up a lot but often either couldn’t make the key pass or interfered with potential chance creating actions. Not the worst performance today but also not great.

McTominay: 6.5

Despite his crazy goalscoring form during the international break, the Scottish midfielder was not up to scratch today. Misplaced a fair amount of passes that prevented United from keeping possession. Other than that he was just anonymous.

Bruno Fernandes: 6

Bruno was trying today but other than a few good passes here and there it was a pretty bad showing for the captain today. Another reason as to why United has low ball retention against the Magpies.

Antony: 7

Antony provided width and had an entertaining battle against Dan Burn but his performance still wasn’t anything special. Had United’s best shot on target albeit a tame one and was a key figure in attack until he was subbed off around the hour mark.

Wout Weghorst: 4

Another wasteful performance in front of goal from the Dutch forward who while not taking his chances wasn’t able to get on the ball of hold up the play that well today. Disappointing again.

Rashford: 6

Nothing really came off for Marcus today, despite switching the flanks with Antony and then Sancho a few times he wasn’t able to make an impact. A few chances to make something happen here and there with an attempted dribble or pass but largely mediocre from him today.

Anthony Martial: 7

Jadon Sancho: 5

Fred: N/A

Victor Lindelof: N/A

Facundo Pellistri: N/A
