Player Ratings: Olympique Lyon 2 – 2 Manchester United

Manchester United were left to contend with a disappointing draw in their first leg against Lyon in the Europa League. It came after two vital mistakes from goalkeeper André Onana that led to the goals. United thought they would be taking a lead back to Old Trafford after Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score, putting them ahead, but a last-minute equalizer kept the scores level.

Here’s how each player performed out of 10:

Goalkeeper and defence

André Onana:

This was a big game for him. A chance to prove himself and calm down all the noise around him. Unfortunately, he was no doubt at fault for both Lyon goals. Amorim must drop him.

Harry Maguire:

Not as good as the other two centre backs, but still put in a decent, solid performance before he was brought off.

Leny Yoro: 7

An instinctive finish for a vital goal and his first for the club. He was decent enough in defence and is very comfortable on the ball.

Noussair Mazraoui:

Made so many blocks and was very resilient in winning the ball back. Another strong performance.

Midfield

Diogo Dalot:

Not an outstanding performance, but did well considering he was on a yellow for most of the game.

Casemiro:

Another comfortable performance in something of a renaissance for him. United certainly won the midfield battle.

Manuel Ugarte: 6

A much steadier performance than he’s shown in the past few weeks. Broke up the play and recycled the ball well.

Patrick Dorgu: 5

Didn’t play well today. He got done a few times by Lyon wingers in that left channel and really struggled to get forward .

Attack

Bruno Fernandes:

Always key in creating chances. He was quiet in the first half but his cross into Zirkzee was inch perfect to create the second goal.

Alejandro Garnacho:

One of his better performances recently. He wasn’t rewarded for his efforts, but he looked up to pass when on the attack, rather than taking it on by himself. He cut back well and created a few decent chances.

Rasmus Højlund: 4

Wasn’t the right choice in the starting XI today. He didn’t fit the game and was very quiet. Managed to fashion a chanced for himself, but his lack of confidence was apparent as he swiped at the ball which rolled along the floor into the keepers arms.

Substitutes

Joshua Zirkzee (63′): 7

Showed excellent positioning to score the second goal, with a nice, composed, comfortable finish. We need to see more of this from him.

Mason Mount (72′): N/A

Kobbie Mainoo (83′): N/A

What a joy to see him back in a United shirt. Even won the ball back for the goal.

Victor Lindelöf (83’): N/A
