Tottenham Hotspur 0-3 Manchester United | Premier League

Manchester United respond to a dismal week with whitewash victory against Tottenham Hotspur

A change in system saw United keep their first clean sheet in 10 games, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford all getting on the score sheet.

Here’s how each player’s performance contributed to United’s victory in north London:

David De Gea: 6

De Gea didn’t have much to do today, as a consequence of a solid display from Manchester United’s defence.

Defence

Luke Shaw: 7

Luke Shaw had a very good game. He was effective as a wing-back, storming forward and tracking back in his defensive duties. Hopefully, Shaw can use this performance as a platform from which to build for the rest of the season.

Harry Maguire: 7

This was a much-improved performance from the skipper. Maguire was solid in the air, and also made a few vital interceptions, working well as a part of United’s back three.

Victor Lindelof: 7

Lindelof had a strong display during today’s game. His ability to read the game and his effective decision-making were two impressive factors which certainly contributed towards the solidarity of the United back-line.

Raphael Varane: 8

Varane was Manchester United’s key defensive asset today. His experience, strength, and tackling ability were evident, and it is clear that Manchester United have missed his presence in recent games.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 8

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was fantastic today. His attacking play was extraordinary, using his speed and dribbling capabilities to cut through Spurs’ defence and create many opportunities for the reds.

Midfield

Fred: 7

Fred was diligent today, putting in a solid performance. His tenacity was a key factor in United’s ability to control the midfield.

Scott Mctominay: 8

Scott Mctominay had a stand-out game. The way he carried the ball and charged through the midfield was inspiring, and his work rate off the ball to keep the Tottenham midfield occupied certainly contributed towards Manchester United’s victory today.

Bruno Fernandes: 8

Bruno Fernandes executed an excellent assist for Cristiano Ronaldo, looping an inch-perfect pass into his path. Aside from this Bruno also looked very lively, using his creative footballing mind to attempt to influence United’s attacking unit.

Attack

Edison Cavani: 9

Cavani worked so hard today and deserved the goal that he got. The goal itself was a real striker’s finish, slightly chipping the ball over Hugo Loris and into the back of the net. Throughout the game, Cavani also seemed to link up very well with his striker-partner, Cristiano. We should hope to see more of this partnership.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 10

Ronaldo was sublime, managing both a goal and an assist! The goal deserves a special mention: An extraordinary volley at a difficult angle, smashed into the bottom right of the opposition goal. In addition to this, his assist for Edison Cavani’s goal was also a demonstration of exceptional forward-play, using his skill to cut back past the Spurs player and elegantly slide the ball into the path of Cavani.

Substitutes:

Marcus Rashford: 8

Marcus Rashford has been immense since returning from injury. He showed this today by making an instant impact upon coming on, scoring a great goal towards the end of the game. Marcus specialises in those kind of one-on-one situations, cutting in from the left-hand side. For Rashford, it is likely that this season can only get better and better!

Nemanja Matic: 7

Matic did a good job of coming onto the pitch late in the game and assisting United in protecting their lead, in a defensive sense. Additionally, he managed to get an assist for Rashford, which further added to United’s lead and made victory a certainty.

Jesse Lingard: 6

Lingard was unable to really get involved in the game. However, when he did get the ball he was tidy and efficient, and his energy helped Manchester United in seeing the rest of the match out.
