Player Ratings: Tranmere Rovers vs Manchester United

Sergio Romero: 7

United’s keeper looked solid and unnerved again, especially in Tranmere’s early spell of being on top. This was Romero’s 35th clean sheet in 54 appearances for Manchester United.

Diogo Dalot: 8

This was Dalot’s first start for United in 3 months and he slotted into the system nicely. Down the right-hand side, the poor playing conditions didn’t seem to phase him, and he even chipped in with a brilliant finish that contributed to the Red’s 6.

Harry Maguire: 9

Maguire was the only player in this line up that had previously played at Tranmere’s ground with Hull City. Harry started the scoring with his first goal in a red shirt. The bullet of a strike was something you’d expect from a centre forward as it rifled into the top corner from outside the box, and he also assisted Jesse Lingard’s goal.

Phil Jones: 8

Had a nervy start where he went down injured, but after that he remained strong at the back. Jones even chipped in with a fantastic headed goal for United.

Victor Lindelof: 7

Didn’t really have a great deal to do in the game, but when required to be called up on he kept very composed and showed the difference in standard between the two sides.

Luke Shaw: 8

Similarly to Dalot he benefitted from the system United played. He offered the attacking output down the left-hand side which provided support for both Martial and Greenwood to shine.

Midfield:

Andreas Pereira: 7

Provided some creative spark for the Red’s whilst playing away from his preferred position in the center of the park. He was largely unpressured but showed some positive signs which is bound to boost his confidence.

Nemanja Matic: 7

Again a strong showing for the Serbian midfielder. He remained disciplined but was subbed off at half time, which I imagine was to rest him for the fixture at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Jesse Lingard: 9

Finally Lingard showed a bit of confidence in this game. He was the playmaker Manchester United needed during this game, providing the creative spark for his teammates. Lingard also chipped in with a brilliant finish against the struggling Tranmere side. He now needs to take this form into the Premier League.

Attack:

Anthony Martial: 7

Similarly to Matic, Martial seemed strong when he was on the pitch providing opportunities for those around him. He also managed to grab a goal before being subbed off at half time.

Mason Greenwood: 8

Again showed signs of being a future star in this game, as he coolly tucked away a penalty with his “weak foot”. This goal took him to double figures so far this season for Man United.

Tahith Chong: 7

came on at half time replacing Martial. He won the penalty that Greenwood converted and showed a positive attacking attitude throughout the half.

Fred: 7

looked unphased by the poor playing conditions and remained untroubled when replacing Matic.

Brandon Williams: 6

Had a good attacking output but the game was finished by the time he came on.
