Watford 4-1 Manchester United | Premier League

Manchester United are embarrassed at Vicarage Road, sowing more seeds of doubt over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign. United were 2-0 down after the first half and despite Donny van de Beek’s efforts cutting the deficit in half, Watford went on to score two additional goals in a historic afternoon for the Hornets.

David De Gea: 6

United’s number one saved two penalties during today’s outing- This was fantastic. However, David did also concede 4 goals. Despite this, he was not necessarily at fault for each goal.

Defence

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 3

Wan-Bissaka had an awful performance. There was no evidence of his natural tackling ability. Improvement needed.

Harry Maguire: 2

This was not a captain’s performance from Maguire – Where was the leadership? Where was the discipline? Where was the spirit? In addition, the Manchester United skipper was removed from the field after receiving two yellow cards. This massively hindered United’s chances of getting back into the game, retrospectively speaking.

Victor Lindelof: 3

Lindelof appeared weak today. He showed a complete lack of authority within, and amongst, Manchester United’s back-line.

Luke Shaw: 3

It would be appropriate to question Luke Shaw’s significant drop in form, as of recently. Where is the full-back of last season, and of the Euro’s? There has been a notable regression, and this needs to be sorted.

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: 3

This performance from Matic was unacceptable. He gave the ball away countless times and was dominated by the opposition within the midfield area.

Scott McTominay: 3

Equally, McTominay had no positive impact upon the game. He was unable to take any control, and displayed a complete lack of discipline.

Bruno Fernandes: 4

Bruno was uncharacteristically poor today. His error essentially led to Watford’s first goal, and he did not positively influence any attacking play for United.

Attack

Marcus Rashford: 5

Marcus was unable to display his strengths today. However, I wouldn’t solely attribute this to him alone.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 5

Ronaldo tried extremely hard to change the game assisting Van de Beek’s goal. This should be acknowledged. Unfortunately, however, he was unable to do so – partly as a consequence of the overall team’s poor effort.

Jadon Sancho: 6

Jadon looked bright. He effectively utilised his creative, attacking flair. Jadon should be pleased with his performance today and should look to build from this platform within the coming games.

Substitutes:

Donny Van De Beek: 7

Donny was excellent. He put a real shift in. Additionally, Manchester United fans will be ecstatic to have seen the dynamic dutchman score a headed goal. Hopefully, we see more of Donny in the near future.

Anthony Martial: 5

In all fairness to Martial, he did make some effective forward runs. However, he didn’t really influence the game massively.

Jesse Lingard: 5

Lingard, due to a lack of game-time, didn’t make any impact.

Diogo Dalot: 4

Dalot was invisible upon coming on. Although, he didn’t have much game time.
