Player Ratings: Wigan Athletic 0-2 Manchester United

Manchester United progress into the 4th round of the FA Cup after a frustrating evening in Wigan.
United took the lead through Diogo Dalot who’s proved to be a scorer of great goals for the Reds this season. Erik ten Hag’s side created some big chances but not being able to convert was the story of United’s first half.
A similar pattern emerged after the half-time interval where United dominated the ball and the chances but struggled to find the net. It eventually took a Bruno Fernandes penalty to double United’s lead and secure a place in the hat for the next round.
Here’s how each player performed with a rating out of 10.
Goalkeeper and defence
Andre Onana: 6
Judging by the pedestrian pace of the game it’s a greater mystery why Onana opted to stay with the United squad ahead of the AFCON. He had very little to do barring a key save in the opening exchanges.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6
Wan-Bissaka played both on the left and the right but remained untested the whole game.
Raphael Varane: 7
Varane faced a physical task tonight, going into war for the length of the game with the Wigan striker. The Frenchman came out on top.
Jonny Evans: 7
Evans’ best work came in the first half where he added numbers to United’s free flowing attacks. Key interceptions and positive possession on the ball helped United maintain moves.
Diogo Dalot: 7
A great goal to break the deadlock, and in reflection had he not taken the chance the game would have been a struggle. A big goal from the full-back.
Midfield
Kobbie Mainoo: 8
Mainoo was a joy to watch. His maturity along with his confidence on the ball set him apart from any of his colleagues.
Scott Mctominay: 4
With the amount of chances generated and the amount he latched onto, you’d really expect a better return from the midfielder.
Bruno Fernandes: 6
Fernandes wasn’t amazing by any means but he did, however dubious, win his penalty and score the goal that doubled our lead.
Attack
Alejandro Garnacho: 8
Another of United’s standout performers on the night. Garnacho was positive all game long and causing problems for the opposition.
Rasmus Hojlund: 4
Similar to Mctominay, Hojlund’s missed chances could have left United in hot water. The Dane had enough opportunities to score.
Marcus Rashford: 5
Rashford assisted the opener but still seems a shadow of his former self. He seems the opposite of what we saw from Garnacho. Rashford cut the figure of a cautious overthinker.
