After weeks of speculation and suggested negotiations, it has become evidently clear that Manchester United are nearing towards an agreement with the Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid for the signing of Raphael Varane, for a price tag reported to be within the region of £38-45million.

Numerous sources close to Real Madrid, such as such as MadridistaReal and Goal, have increasingly suggested that the two clubs are in advanced negotiations for the transfer, with both parties willing to negotiate in order for a deal to be completed in a swift manner. In addition, French outlet Le Parisien reported a source close to Manchester United solidifying these claims of advanced negotiations by describing the inevitable agreement as ‘rapidly approaching’. The Mail report that a recent breakthrough in negotiations means Varane could be unveiled as the Reds’ latest recruit ‘within the next week’.

After Manchester United officially announced the capture of young superstar winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last week, it seems the club intend to pursue more high-quality players in several other positions, in a bid to hunt for silverware success in the upcoming 2021/22 season; with Raphael Varane seeming to be the next addition to Solskjaer’s talented squad amid speculation that the French centre-back could be revealed within the upcoming week.

The 3 times Champions league and world cup winner has conveyed his desire to try a new experience in the premier league and favours United, supporting reports that personal terms between the club and player have been agreed around a contract that would expire in 2026.

This leaves only a fee between Real Madrid and Manchester United in the way of the completion of this transfer, which would appear a bargain considering the outstanding pedigree of the Madrid regular, perhaps alluding to Los Blancos’ need to sell players and remove high wage-earners following a tough financial year for the club due to COVID-19.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching staff have meticulously scouted Raphael Varane as the perfect defender to complement Harry Maguire, after the Englishman largely impressed during the recent Euro 2020 competition, seeing England reach the final with Maguire playing a lead role in the team’s success. Varane’s pace, ariel ability, and positional awareness is seen to provide a fundamental improvement to the way in which Manchester United’s back four will operate, whilst also allowing more leeway for their midfield to venture forward, adding a more expansive and attacking dimension to Manchester United’s tactical capabilities.

Within the coming days this story is sure to progress, with the signing of Raphael Varane appearing increasingly likely. The addition of Varane to the current United squad will certainly improve their defensive abilities, adding an experienced and serial winner into the mix.

Now the question remains, will this deal mark the end of Manchester United’s summer transfer window, or will the English super-club venture further in their attempts to add reinforcements within their ranks?
