Why Kobbie Mainoo has Already become One Of Manchester United’s Most Important Players

Kobbie Mainoo is quickly emerging as one of Manchester United’s most important players.
It’s fair to suggest that Mainoo of is emerging as one of the most exciting midfield talents in the Premier League. The 18-year-old has taken his opportunity at United by storm. Following his splendid performance in the FA Cup against Championship outfit Wigan Athletic it is clear that the youngster has established himself as a regular within the first team.
In a season which has seen United underperform heavily, Mainoo has been a breath of fresh air. Some could also go as far as suggesting he is saving Erik Ten Hag’s position as the manager. In a midfield filled with so-called stars who arrived with huge price tags from Bruno Fernandes to four times Champions League winner Casemiro, it is the academy player taking the spotlight. Although Mainoo officially made his debut for the first team in January of 2023 it has been the current 23/24 campaign which has seen him stamp his authority in the first XI.

However, the qualities that have been brought to the table by the 18-year-old are undeniable. From his ability to intercept play, his passing range to his intelligence in understanding how to link up play. It’s rare to see a young player who has come through the ranks to have such high levels of confidence and technical ability. These attributes have been what the united midfield have needed. Although it’s clear what Bruno Fernades brings to the team it is also clear that he isn’t a player who has great levels of ball retention and is able to control a game by himself. Casemiro’s strengths stem from his proficiency off the ball but United hadn’t possessed a midfielder with the who can keep the ball ticking whilst controlling the tempo of the game.

FA Cup glory will however not be Mainoo’s sole focus as the Euros this summer is looming closer. Without an England appearance to his name yet the chances aren’t huge however there most definitely is an outside chance that Garth Southgate could invite the 18-year-old as part of the travelling squad come summer judging by recent performances. The competition within his position haven’t yet stamped their place with Kalvin Phillips not playing regularly and Jordan Henderson no longer playing in Europe which all but gives Mainoo more hope of securing a spot within the squad.
There will certainly be a lot of pressure on the shoulders of this phenomenal star midfielder now however pressure makes diamonds and there are no signs of folding from him thus far…
